Back again, this time after completing the divisive Final Fantasy II. I'll try to break down this postmortem into a few main sections.

Story and Characters

This was what I was most excited about moving from Final Fantasy I to II. But unfortunately the story star wa... I mean Final Fantasy II leaves plenty to be desired. While the premise of joining a rebel army as orphans is cool, you never feel as though Firion is much of a character along with Maria and Guy (who is a little simple, I think?). They were plenty of cool set pieces such as the disguised princess seducing you as well as the destruction of the Dread Star. But it never felt as though it amounted to any strong emotions. I did really enjoy how crazy the emperor going to Hell, killing the devil and becoming the new lord of the underworld was and I hope more Final Fantasy villains will reach this level of feats!

The party characters were a bit on the weak side (and not just in gameplay). Outside of Ricard the rest of our temporary compatriots felt like they were just joining us for a few battles to immediately die/ get lost (RIP Josef). Although our party members sometimes felt as though they were in a revolving door to death, it did it's job at capturing the loss one can experience during war time.

However, I am aware this story criticism is through a modern lens. If I had no outside knowledge and was coming just from FFI I think this would've had a much stronger impact.

Game play

This is where I am very conflicted. The idea of having characters that are blank slates is neat, but the execution is pretty lousy. I was lucky enough to have enough background knowledge on the game to know that shields gave you agility growth and wearing heavy armor reduced spell effectiveness. But I imagine not knowing that would be a serious detriment to your enjoyment of the game.

Because of how grind dependent the stat system is I just ended up throwing each character in a very specific niche and never branching out of that. I think what I am seeing here is a proto-job system, where your character can change what they wanna do but is done VERY slowly.

Overall, the game play was serviceable but I hope I do not encounter this style of leveling in future entries.

Last Bits

I think this game is an important step for the franchise. You can see the experimentation with multiple party members, a WORLD that tells a story, and a "unique" leveling system. Again, I'm excited to see how these games develop and look forward to tackling FFIII shortly!

Thanks for entertaining my rambling thoughts, and be sure to share what you are think about FFII! (If you are interested in watching these games live, shoot me a message and I'll share the twitch channel)

That is quite an analysis casual_chemist! I love how you have outlined every element of the game to perfection. For a game review, this is pretty good. To add on to this, FFII is massively underrated. As simple as it is, it needs to be told. Haha, I think this game has more deaths than Hamlet.Minwu dies, Cid dies, Ricard dies, Josef dies, the king dies, even the emperor himself dies.

FFII does a good job at setting up conflicts since the story is focused on the battles that span the continents. I wish we saw more of Emperor Palamecia. He only had two or three scenes in this game, and it kinda hurts his oppressive stature as this evil figure who desires nothing but ruling the world.

Considering it was one of the earliest release. I think it was a good story from my view. Also the game play wise it was good for that time. Now a days graphics needs to be lot better though.

On its own,it still remains a nice game. Thanks also to the developers who have worked hard to come up with other improved versions.

I did enjoy the game because of its great story. The gameplay for me is not bad and the unique twist of the game makes it more interesting to play. I'm glad they include Minwu in the game that has the Ultima skill.

That is very true. The interesting bit of the game makes it to be admired by many people out there. There are so many people I have introduced to this game and they have all admitted it is fantastic.

Well I am pretty safe in assuming that I was just ready to keep going and try the next. At that stage I am not sure I was as avid a player as in my hay day but still had that urge to play more.

Final Fantasy II was entertaining though we can't change the fact that it was the older version so the graphics might not be as good as compared today. I like the soundtrack because it added to the drama of the story. The story was quite intriguing that you needed to pay attention much because you'll be lost if you're not focused.

In this Final Fantasy 2 game, the conversations and story are the best features of the game-but I would say magic is king in this game instead of the hand-to-hand combat type of weapons. I think the spellcasters with magic really rule this game and not so much the melee weopons guy !

I actually didn't play from Final Fantasy 1 to 3. I started from Final Fantasy 4 and upwards, so I can't really give any opinion on this as I didn't play it.
