Lord of the Rings is public domain right? I mean even Soviet Russia is able to make their own version of it without repercussions.

This is the first time I heard about it. @Hailw Earver I dont think it is public domain. In the UK you still have to pay J.R.R. Tolkien's state. It is more practical for Square Soft or Square Enix to just use their original concepts.
