News: Final Fantasy XIV Holds New Player-Designed Gear Contest

Final Fantasy XIV Online has announced a new Gear Design Contest, the third after 2016's Tank Gear competition and 2017's DPS gear event. This time you'll be designing your own melee gear, and if you're fortunate enough, you just may see it realized in the game!

LOS ANGELES (April 23, 2018) – FINAL FANTASY® XIV Online players the world over are being offered the opportunity to see their armor designs implemented in-game with the latest Gear Design Contest. Focusing on melee and ranged physical DPS gear designs, the competition is underway now, and fans have until May 21, 2018 to submit their designs for the chance to see them created by the dev team and added within the realm of Eorzea®.

This is the third such design contest held to implement players’ gear designs into FINAL FANTASY XIV Online. The first was held in July of 2016 and sought designs for tank gear, which were added to the game with the release of the critically-acclaimed Stormblood® expansion. The second competition took place in March of 2017 and went on the hunt for the best player-created designs of healer and ranged magic DPS gear. While the healer gear was added as a dungeon reward in Patch 4.1, the ranged magic DPS gear will soon make its debut as a reward in The Swallow’s Compass, the latest dungeon to be added in Patch 4.3.

The FINAL FANTASY XIV Online Free Trial allows new players to easily join the millions of adventurers in the realm of Eorzea. The free trial allows anyone to access all available content up to level 35 (including the new Rival Wings PvP), create up to eight playable characters, and experience the different playable races, classes, and jobs with no restrictions on playtime.

I think contest such as that can motivate many artists to get into the remark in their portfolio. That is if their design gets selected. But this is indeed a good opportunity. And even better a chance to contribute to the design of the game.

It will be interesting to see what kind of art & designs for gear they can up with, for this Final Fantasy XIV gear contest. Also I see that they are giving out prizes to other people, besides just the winner as well- but it does not look like any prize money, just gifts ?

Am I good enough with design to try and enter this contest? No, I don't think so, I would simply just be on the lookout for the people with the best still when designing is called into question. Good luck to everyone who is going to participate in the contest.

I must have been living under a rock cause this is the first time I'm coming across the Gear Design contest. I have to give it to Square Enix for coming up with a fun way to get gamers involved in the developing of the game, I can't wait to see who wins.

I've always had mixed feelings when it comes to these contests. I mean I really loved the gear from The Lost City of Skalla, but I was totally disappointed with the tank Creation gear.

It's quite well what Square Enix tried to do with making this design an open contest. It's surely going to pull lots of gaming fans who are good in design field to actively participate in the contest.

It's good to acknowledge one's strength and weaknesses, thus it would help one to know he or she would likely succeed or fail. If one knows quite well one isn't capable of doing a particular thing, it's better to stay clear.

If I'm going to participate in the contest and offered the chance to choose what my gift would be should I happen to win the contest, I think I would go for the obvious choice which would be cash money .

I'm quite sure that we are going to see a lot of good work done by lots of people who are actually good at designing. I can remember stumbling across one gamers Twitter account who is a FF fan and an artist as well. He had some great work on his page.
