Is Orphan really good or bad?

Well, based on the game's story mode, Orphan is the Fal'cie responsible for cocoons power and keeping the world floating. It got confusing for me because Snow, Lightning, Fang, Vanille, Sazh and Hope head into Orphan's cradle to save orphan in order to in turn save Cocoon, but that is not what happens. Orphan and Bathandalus fuse to torment Vanille and force her to turn into ragnarok. Why would Orphan fuse with Barthandalus who obviously wants to destroy him?

I don't believe FFXIII was a success narrative at all. The entire game's story is annoying. Why would orphan struggle to die!? Beats me.

I think Orphan didn't really have a choice in the matter. In my opinion, he was forced by Bathandalus to bend to his will with some sort of mind control or something. It also could be that Orphan himself was not good, was in league with the enemy, and that it was all a plan he and Bathandalus had concocted, to destroy Cocoon and all the humans in it. Why? That is still a mystery to me.

On the contrary, I really enjoyed the plot. The only problem I had was understanding Orphans side in the coin toss. On one hand he is supposed to be one of the good Fal'Cie, but he acts pretty different from the way they painted him out to be.
