Episodic vs Full game

There are rumors that Final Fantasy 7 remake might be episodic. I really prefer a full game on a disk but we know most videogame companies these days does DLC abuse because it makes more money.

I remember Resident evil Revelations 2 is episodic and there is a new episode every month. Eventually it is released as a full game you can buy on disk or buy digitally. This must be the pattern Square Enix wanted to follow.

The advantage of an Episodic game is the game might have a longer life since they can make new episodes as long as people are buying. The disadvantage is that your wallet will be drained. Fans can at least wait for a year before SE will release a full version.

Waiting for new episodes will make you lose interest plus this is going to be expensive for developers making it expensive for us.

I guess you are right, even if they decide to take the episodic path we are still going to buy the game.

Well that is always the point that seems to ring true no matter what @Seifer_Leonhart , if you follow the money you usually find the answer. I agree though you can usually call the bluff when someone says they will not buy it.

It will be one game. If you are patient and not buy the episodes, A complete edition will eventually be released. Those complete editions will have all the episodes and be sold for a cheaper price but you will be waiting for 2 years for that to happen.

I don't think I can wait a few months let alone 2yrs. I guess the episodes will have to do.

Two years does seem like a long time and before that would come I might just forget about it, although not likely. I am not sure I have it in me to wait that long though.

I guess they are called 'episodes' because they tell a part of the full story but scale wise each episode is equivalent to a full game. My guess is it will take 3-4 episodes to complete the whole story.

I think episodic sounds better. And it can give kind of cinematic feel. But it depends on the gamer though. I prefer the full game for some plots.

The many reasons I get from people on why they hate episodic games, is because they are so used to playing and beating the whole game in one go. Waiting for a month or two just to play another episode sucks for many gamers.

I agree it depends with the game. Some games like 'Hitman' needs you to replay episodes to find new and different ways of beating certain levels/bosses.

I would like a full game instead of an episodic one so that there won't be any issues with save files and progress. I want the game to be continuous so that all my items and levels will be intact. Some episodic games just transfer some of your in-game choices or some of your items. I hope that even if Final Fantasy VII remake would be an episodic one, it would take all my progress with every episode.

The episodic strategy made the undertaking more manageable and allowed for an experience as rich as the original playstation classic. The episodic strategy, however allows the developer to dig deeper in to the world and let the players explore previously unseen areas.

Yes in fact such games as hitman are worth playing if they seem to have a good progress with it. I have personally found out that some of the games need story-line to progress one at a time.

I think episodic is good enough when you have some story to tell. And have some sort of motive to connect the people into the game. I guess in such context you should consider episodic. And full game only when there is something to be worth connecting onto without any specific story.
