Square Enix wanted Dissidia to become an E-sport. It has the potential since it is a fighting game with Final Fantasy characters on it. There are now tournaments of it being held and broadcasted online but the community is still small compared to tournament staple fighting games like Tekken and Street Fighter.

According to Square, Dissidia kind of convinced some Fighting game players to play the actual Final Fantasy games after having attachment to them from playing Dissidia so making Dissidia popular kind of helps Final Fantasy to have a more mainstream appeal.

Pretty much every competitive MP game has a chance to become an e-sports title, if it's popular enough. I don't think it will ever reach a massive playerbase, since most of the people playing this will be FF fans, and we're not near as numerous as CS, Dota, Overwatch etc. fans.

I don't think Dissidia is trying to compete with first person shooters and Battle arena type of E-sports. I think they want to compete against Tekken and Street Fighter. The Persona 4 fighting game actually became an E-sport and the players dont even play Persona.

Most E-sport fighting games became appealing to the competitive scene because of Balance.
