Anyone who remembers Final Fantasy spirits within

This is the very first global scale Final Fantasy
movie. Unlike Final Fantasy 7 Advent children it is not a Japanese production but a Hollywood movie. Despite of being titled Final Fantasy, there is no prominent Final Fantasy characters. Not even Chocobos!




It doesn't have the team dynamic FF is known for because the characters dies one by one like teens from a slasher movie.

Nope, never watched it. Resident evil and Tomb Raider movies were pretty awful so now I avoid any movie that is related to a video game franchise.

Thanks for posting-but no I have never heard of this movie before you mentioned it. This movie(Final Fantasy:The Spirits Within) has been out awhile(2001) though and it takes place in the year 2065- it seems the earth is being invaded by phantom-like aliens. They say this movie was written by the Final Fantasy series creator though, but another interesting thing is that Final Fantasy branched out to making films, and called themselves Square Pictures- but they shut down fast because they lost a lot of money with this film.

The biggest achievement of this movie, it's main character Aki Ross posed in a bikini in multiple men's magazine. She is the only CGI character to make it in FHM's 100 sexiest women. There are some fans who wants her in dissidia but I don't think it will happen.

Spirits Within is the reason why Square Soft became Square Enix. This movie put them in so much bankruptcy that a company named Enix had bought them. This is a very high budget movie, You can see how realistic looking Aki Ross is and she was developed on the late 90's.

I remember watching it on AXN. It was exclusive at that time on the channel. It was not a good design of characters by any shot. but it seems like by that standard in that year it was good enough.

Thank the heavens someone finally started this thread. Why in hell did they use the Final Fantasy name on this dumb movie? Was it just to get Final Fantasy gamers hooked? I swear I think that is the only reason.

I feel it was weird for it to be called Final Fantasy too. It doesn't have the story or characters that resemble a typical Final Fantasy game. It was more like the typical Sci-fi alien western movie.

It is not really a bad movie. If this movie have a different title, I think it won't have the criticism it received. Aki Ross doesn't use a sword, The setting is too modern and post apocalyptic. Yes Final Fantasy have futuristic technologies but it always have a medieval feel. This movie on the other hand is way too futuristic. It is also way too serious.

The only connection Final Fantasy Spirits Within had with the other titles is that it was directed by Sakaguchi and it had that character called Dr. Sid

If this movie is not titled Final Fantasy it would have been received better. Not really a bad movie but has no connection with Final Fantasy. Also the villains looks the same. Maybe if Aki Ross rides a chocobo and have a pet Moogle, it might have got received better.
